Time and technology [result]

on Tue Apr 27, 2010 3:37 pm
The arrival of high technology has completely changed the way we live. Machinery was built to help us save time and electronic devices were made to help us pass time. In our days, this reliable luxury has progress too fast. New products arrive continuously and push too quickly the previous ones to a point where their values will be lost.

The “useful-time” of a product is shorter and shorter. I still remember, back when I was young, how connecting on Internet took people so much time and how often the “busy” signal appeared on their screen. In our days, if anyone was still using Ethernet cable, he would lose patient. In fact, now, people use to buy new products to replace the old ones event if they were not damaged. Also, it’s because they are out-fashioned. The first time when my aunt brought a cell phone was four years ago. Today, if she still used that cell phone in a public place, she would be totally embarrassed. But what really surprised me is that she and her family change their cell phone every six month. That makes 8 cell phones in a year!

Once my friend said that she’s mad with her studies (she’s studying in a four years technical degree). Because of the amount of technical information doubles every two years, half of what she learned in her first year was outdated in her third year. With the arrival of the media and the Internet, new inventions and discoveries move faster and faster. The effect on human knowledge is spectacular compared with the time where telecommunication doesn’t exist, when people couldn’t spread their ideas wildly as today. In the New York Time, a week of its information contains more that what a person can come across in lifetime during the 18th century.

The value of old products lows faster and faster. Sadly, people tend to forget about how great those inventions were. Furthermore, prices have hugely reduced for the outdated products. It was known that DVD players coasted close to a thousand dollars. Now, we can get one for less than a hundred. Beside, many stores such as Wal-Mart are giving them away free with a large purchase at some retailers.

We are marching too quickly into new discoveries and inventions. It’s time to slow down. Otherwise, technological development might surpass the limit. I can imagine when that day comes, it’ll bring global chaos and humanity will collapse.
